But as awesome as the experience may be, it’s critical to put safety first to ensure the well being of all. SML Insiders is dedicated to promoting lake safety and shares these pro tips for enjoying fireworks by boat.

Insider’s Guide to SML Fireworks By Boat

SML’s two most spectacular over-the-water fireworks shows will be launched by professionals on July 2 and 4 and include viewing areas designated as temporary no-wake zones from 8 to 11 p.m. If you’re out on the water those evenings, it’s important to exercise caution to avoid mishaps and collisions.

First, take care not to get so distracted that you lose your bearings. Slow to idle speed or find an off-channel spot to drift. However, remember to keep running lights on as you are still officially “underway” unless beached, tied to a dock or anchored (and showing a single white anchor light).

On July 2, Mitchell’s Point Marina in Craddock Creek will host the weekend’s first over-water firewokrs. Best viewing is in the vicinity of marker C4.

On July 4, Saunders Volunteer Fire & Rescue will sponsor its fireworks spectacular in conjunction with Parkway Marina. By-boat viewing area is the large bay below channel marker R9 and in the vicinity of B1, where the Roanoke and Blackwater rivers converge.

Typically, the fireworks begin around 9:45 p.m. During both evenings, boats must slow to idle speed upon entering the primary viewing areas to prevent disturbance to other vessels and ensure everyone’s safety and comfort.

Creating a wake in the no-wake zone is considered reckless operation and may result in a citation from law enforcement.

Vessels crewed by volunteers from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and SML Sail and Power Squadron, displaying flashing amber flashing lights, will help mark the boundaries of the No-Wake Zone near Parkway on July 4. Law enforcement and emergency vessels display flashing red, blue and yellow lights

When leaving the area, boaters must again idle through the no-wake zone before accelerating to a safe after-dark cruising speed. This gives the traffic (as many as 3,000 boats is typical at Parkway) a chance to separate before wakes are generated.

Smith Mountain Lake boaters have embraced this no-wake fireworks protocol since 2006, resulting in improved comfort and safety for their fellow boaters. SML Insiders urges all boaters to continue exhibiting this safe and courteous behavior in 2026 and beyond.
