Award-winning wines and a robust slate of diverse, family-friendly events is what residents and visitors can expect to uncork at the new Wind Vineyards at Smith Mountain Lake.

Located on farmland off Virginia 122 in Bedford County, the property has a tranquil, bucolic charm. The atmosphere is akin to that of Tyler and Ashley Wind’s flagship winery near the Chesapeake Bay, where the couple has built a reputation for hosting popular community events.

And the Winds, part-time SML residents since 2011, are wasting no time diving in here. Already on tap are a rodeo, hot air balloon festival and a monster truck show.

Wind Vineyards at Laurel Grove started in a similar fashion with a rustic barn serving as the tasting room before the couple built a multi-million dollar facility.

At SML, Tyler Wind said his initial plans include renovating one of the farm’s existing barns into a pavilion-style tasting room, offering guests an open-air yet sheltered space for wine tastings.

“We’re also planning to construct a raised stage to host live concerts, hopefully kicking off in late July or early August,” he said, noting the venue will be available for fundraisers and other events such as weddings, as well.

SML will boast one of the world’s largest corkscrews when a 35-foot sculpture makes its way to the Wind Vineyards property.

“It’s going to be a build-out process. Our initial focus is on hiring staff, enhancing infrastructure, opening our doors, hosting events and acquainting ourselves with the community,” said Wind, a retired orthopedic surgeon. “Our aim is to ensure visitors have an exceptional experience.”

While initially operating only on weekends, Wind Vineyards at Smith Mountain Lake aims to eventually open seven days a week, year-round.
