Yes. One of SML State Park’s most popular attractions is its 500-foot sandy beach, one of the few designated public areas for swimming at Smith Mountain Lake.

The roped-off swim area offers a safe, family-friendly place to cool off during the summer season, with lifeguards typically on duty from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

Visitors to this public beach at Smith Mountain Lake VA will find clean sand, shaded picnic areas and a modern bathhouse with changing rooms and showers. During peak season, the snack bar offers cold drinks, ice cream and light fare, making it easy to spend the entire day by the water.

SML State Park features about 12 miles of well-maintained trails, ranging from a half-mile to 3 miles, that wind through hardwood forests and along the shoreline.

From short, easy walks to moderate hikes the are some of the best hikes at Smith Mountain Lake. Popular routes like Turtle Island Trail, Beaver Den Trail and Chestnut Ridge Trail offer scenic views and opportunities to spot birds, deer and other wildlife.

Smith Mountain Lake State Park biking trails are also popular. The park’s trails and roadways offer scenic routes for an enjoyable ride, with opportunities to take in views of the lake and surrounding woods along the way. All trails are open to mountain biking, so visitors can bring their own bikes and explore at their own pace.

For those looking to go farther, the park includes an 8.7-mile segment of the Smith Mountain Lake Bike Route, part of a scenic 50-mile loop through Bedford County designed to highlight some of the area’s best lake views. Maps are available at the Visitor Center during regular hours.

For those looking to get out on the water, the park offers convenient lake access along with seasonal rentals that make it easy to explore. Quiet coves and shoreline views provide a different perspective of Smith Mountain Lake, especially for paddlers.

A public boat launch with ample trailer parking is available, with free access for overnight guests. In season, Bridgewater Marina rents tritoons, ski boats, fishing boats, kayaks, paddleboards from docks adjacent to the beach.

Check the SML State Park calendar for special ranger-led pontoon boat tours. On select days, you can join a free 90-minute ride to learn about the lake’s history, spot wildlife and enjoy some of the best photo views on the water.

Fishing at SML State Park is another popular draw, with opportunities to cast from the shoreline, fish from a boat or paddle out to deeper water.

The park also features a universally accessible fishing pier, making it easy for visitors of all abilities to enjoy casting a line. Anglers regularly reel in striped bass, largemouth bass, crappie and catfish, depending on the season.

A valid Virginia freshwater fishing license is required for anyone 16 and older, with the exception of designated free fishing days.

For campers, tent and RV sites, many with electric/water hookups, are available but need to be reserved well in advance. Sites are equipped with fire pits, picnic tables and many have shady spots. Bathhouses with hot showers are nearby.

Does Smith Mountain Lake State Park have cabins?

Yes. SML State Park offers a rustic bunkhouse and 20 two- and three-bedroom cabins, some with lake views and each with a handy designated boat slip. Cabins include full kitchens, bathrooms, air conditioning and heat.

Weekly rentals are required in peak summer season; shorter stays are available spring and fall. Overnight guests receive one day of free swimming with each night’s stay plus free use of the boat launch ramp.
