Since its establishment in 1992, Lake Christian Ministries (LCM) has served as a crucial support system for the Smith Mountain Lake region.

Now, in response to heightened demand due to the pandemic and rising costs, LCM has expanded, adding a new building adjacent to its original location on Old Moneta Road.

According to Executive Director Jane Winters, the 5,000-square-foot facility offers additional resources such as a learning center, clothing selection area, warehouse for furniture and household items, loading dock for donations and additional parking.

The nearly $1 million facility, funded through a private capital campaign, became necessary due to a notable surge in low-income families across Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania counties struggling with escalating costs of food, housing and utilities, Winters said. In addition, it will offer essential space to bolster LCM’s New Tomorrows program, which focuses on job readiness, educational classes and community service connections.

“We have learned that providing food, clothing and crisis financial aid doesn’t always bring the change needed to transition out of poverty,” Winters said. “New Tomorrows services are vital to helping our neighbors move toward more secure lives.”
