Spring has a way of making us pause and take stock of where we’ve been and where we’re headed. This year, that reflection feels especially meaningful.

In 2026, Smith Mountain Lake marks its 60th anniversary, while the United States celebrates 250 years. Together, these milestones remind us that our region’s story is still being written, shaped by generations who have cared for this place and by the people who continue to invest in its future.

In this issue, we take a deeper look at the history of Smith Mountain Lake, from its earliest days to the community it has become today. It’s a chance to honor the vision, resilience and stewardship that transformed this area into the vibrant place so many of us call home and a destination visitors return to year after year.

Co-publisher Andie Gibson (far right), Casey Johnson of RE/MAX Lakefront Realty and George Cooper of Deb Beran Properties toured the Smith Mountain Dam in April 2025 as part of the SML Regional Chamber’s Leadership Academy. Post-9/11 restrictions limit tours to only a few groups each year, but the overlook at the Vipperman Visitor Center remains open to the public and offers an excellent view of the dam.

At the same time, spring invites us to look ahead. Our annual Home & Garden Guide is designed to spark ideas and inspiration as the lake welcomes another season.

From a thoughtful renovations and landscaping to dock and deck projects and design trends, these pages celebrate the creativity and craftsmanship that make life at the lake even better. Be sure to check out our business spotlights to connect with trusted area professionals who can bring those ideas to life.

You’ll also find our 2026 Events Guide to help you plan ahead and make the most of the year, with a roundup of Smith Mountain Lake’s top festivals, fundraisers and community happenings.

This is a big year for our region, one rooted in history and full of momentum. We’re grateful to share these stories with you as we head into a season of renewal and fresh beginnings.
