This year’s Smith Mountain Lake Antique and Classic Boat Show—a dream event for boat lovers eager to admire beautifully restored vessels of the past—is set for Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Goodhue Boat Company, Blackwater.

Now in its 33rd year, the show continues to mesmerize attendees with a display of nearly 50 distinctive antique wooden, aluminum and classic fiberglass boats, showcased both in the water and on land.

Visitors to the SML Antique Boat Show can soak in the elegance of these vintage vessels and admire the craftsmanship of the dedicated enthusiasts who have brought them back to life, sometimes from little more than a skeletal frame.

In recent years, interest in early fiberglass boats has surged. These models gained popularity in the late 1960s as wooden boat production declined due to mahogany shortages, rising costs and the public’s desire for lower-maintenance options. Often featuring car-inspired designs from the 1950s and 60s, several of these nostalgic classics will be on display alongside the impressive wooden boats that never fail to earn their share of “oohs” and “aahs.”

Also on-site will be a variety of vendors and organizations happy to chat with visitors about all things boating. Admission and parking are free.

Held rain or shine, the show is sanctioned by the Antique and Classic Boat Society, an international organization dedicated to preserving historic, antique and classic boats. ACBS is celebrating its 50th this year. The Smith Mountain Lake Chapter, founded in 1991 and officially chartered in 1999, is one of 53 chapters across North America and Europe.
