Reel Connections for Kids (RCK) began in 2022 as a project of the Smith Mountain Striper Club, sparked by the idea of creating a fishing event for children who might not otherwise have access to the lake, fishing gear or a mentor to teach them the joys and skills of angling.
In partnership with organizations like Lake Christian Ministries and SML Good Neighbors, the club launched its first “Take a Kid Fishing” event at what is now Goodhue Boat Company, Blackwater in June 2022. SeaTow donated life jackets, Magnum Point Marina provided lunch, and volunteers helped clean the fish and send each child home with a cooler full of fresh catch and easy-to-follow cooking tips. The smiles and stories that came from that first event were so impactful that the program quickly grew into its own nonprofit, Reel Connections for Kids, Inc.
The “Take a Kid Fishing” event continues annually, pairing kids with professional guides for a half-day of striped bass fishing.

Each September, RCK hosts a “ReConnect” event, offering fishing-related games, skill-building activities and family fun for all past participants.
RCK also provides lifetime fishing licenses to eligible kids and is developing new outreach programs for veterans, children with disabilities and those facing serious health conditions. Plans are also underway to establish a scholarship fund for students pursuing degrees in water or wildlife conservation and environmental studies.
This year’s “Take a Kid Fishing” is scheduled for May 31 at Goodhue Boat Company, Blackwater. To learn more about participating, volunteering or making a donation, contact Ken Britske at 908-692-2451 or visit reelconnectionsforkids.org.Mission.
