As in much of the country—and the world—pickleball is booming at Smith Mountain Lake, providing residents and visitors of all ages with a fast-paced, social and energizing way to stay active. With a growing number of public and private courts throughout the area, it’s easy to find a game that fits your skill level and your schedule.

Many players stay connected through a variety of apps, which help coordinate matches, reserve courts and keep the local pickleball community in the loop. Use this insider’s guide to explore where to play, learn about amenities and discover helpful tips—then grab a paddle and get in the game!

Public Courts

Crosswhite Athletic Club

Crosswhite features six dedicated outdoor pickleball courts, a mini indoor court for dinking and drills and a welcoming community atmosphere. Open play is available from 8 a.m. to noon Monday-Saturday and 5-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Clinics are available for beginners eager to learn the game, while coaching is offered for players looking to sharpen their skills. Members can choose a pickleball-only option or a full membership that includes gym and pool access.

Smith Mountain Lake YMCA of Franklin County

Smith Mountain Lake YMCA of Franklin County

The YMCA at LakeWatch Plantation is a central hub for pickleball at Smith Mountain Lake, and the program is expanding with the construction of five new outdoor courts, set to open this summer. The facility also features seven indoor courts and an active community of players at all levels. Membership options include youth, individual, senior and family plans, with punch card and day pass alternatives also available.

Eastlake Community Church

Welcoming and laid-back, Eastlake Community Church offers five indoor courts open to the public with no membership required. Players just need to sign a liability waiver, and donations are accepted to help cover equipment costs. Play times include recreational sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon, competitive play on Tuesdays and Fridays during the same time and a mix of both on Saturdays. Players can access the full schedule and sign-ups via the Team Reach app.

Huddleston Veterans Memorial Courts

Opened in 2023, this public facility near Mitchell’s Point Marina in Huddleston features dedicated pickleball courts alongside basketball and street hockey amenities. The Huddleson Veterans Memorial Courts are free and open to the community, making it a welcoming spot for casual games and family fun.

Private Courts

Bernard’s Landing

Bernard’s Landing is a private lakefront community that offers six outdoor pickleball courts to residents and guests. Renters at Bernard’s Landing typically have access to the pickleball courts and other amenities such as indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a fitness center, four tennis courts and a beach area, but it’s best to confirm with your host or property manager. 

Lakeview Farm Pickleball Retreat

A private, four-bedroom lakefront vacation rental home, Lakeview Farm Pickleball Retreat features an indoor pickleball court, allowing guests to play day or night, regardless of weather conditions. Additional amenities include a pool, walking trail, playground, basketball court and workout room. Guests can also take advantage of private lessons from certified pickleball instructor Kristie MacDonald. 

Mariners Landing

With 12 dedicated outdoor courts with permanent lines and nets, Mariners Landing is a standout pickleball facility at Smith Mountain Lake. Some courts are equipped with lighting, allowing for evening play. In addition, Mariners Landing offers indoor and outdoor pools, a hot tub, fitness center, tennis courts, volleyball, walking trails and more. You must be an owner, member or registered guest to access the courts and other amenities.

The Waterfront Country Club

The Waterfront Country Club offers a premier pickleball experience with four permanent outdoor hard courts and the capacity for two additional temporary courts, all accessible to members and their guests. The club caters to players of all skill levels, with organized play sessions for beginners and intermediates scheduled throughout the week. Beyond pickleball, members enjoy an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, a pool and fitness center.

The Water’s Edge Country Club

Located in Penhook, The Water’s Edge Country Club features four outdoor pickleball courts, which are lined tennis courts used for both sports. Play is available to members and their guests. The club, which fosters an active pickleball community with both casual and competitive play opportunities, is offering invitational memberships for a limited time.
